Rental Program

So you want to rent a board game… now you can at Hexagon! To learn more about renting our games, we have compiled some questions you may have about the program. If you have further questions please contact us at info@thehexcafe.com. Rejuvenate your board game nights, safely & at home, with the help of Hex!

How does it work?

Games available to rent can be browsed in person at the cafe and will be marked with a yellow, blue, or red sticker.  All of the rentable games are part of the cafe’s main game library so availability will vary.  If the specific game you wish to rent is unavailable, we will be happy to give you recommendations on great alternatives!

What is the cost to rent a board game?

Not all board games are equal, and that is reflected in the cost of the rental. We use three tiers to assign prices to our games:

$5 Tier (Yellow dot): The low price doesn’t mean these games are less fun, they are just the smallest games from Hexagon’s collection! These are card games and other short and sweet options.

$10 Tier (Blue dot): The “average” board game is included in this tier, yet don’t confuse your grandma’s game closet with this category! These are fun and exciting games that offer a bit more than just a warm-up card game.

$15 Tier (Red dot): This category includes the heavy hitters of the board game world – those that have more complex components and a higher retail price point. Because these games can often be expensive to buy, renting is a great option to experience the game while you decide whether to invest in purchasing it or not!

How long do I get to keep the game?

All game rentals are one (1) week. For example, if you rent it on Saturday, you have until the following Saturday before close to return it. Make sure to play (and replay!) the games for maximum fun.

Can I reserve a game or put it on hold?

All the rentable games are part of the cafe’s library so games are available on a first-come, first-served basis only.

Why isn’t every game available for rent?

We are working towards adding more titles from our library to the rental program.  If there is a game you would like to rent but is currently not included in our rental program, send us an email and we can have it ready in 48 hours.  Keep in mind, you always have the option to play these games in person at the cafe!

Oops! What happens if I keep the game past its due date?

Returning games is important because we want to give everybody the opportunity to rent the games they want to play. That said, mistakes happen! If you keep a game past the due date, there will be a fee of $3 per day per late item or the equivalent of a 7-day rental, whichever is lower.

Unfortunately, if a game is overdue by 3 weeks, we will have to deem it missing and/or lost and you will be subject to the full retail price for the replacement of the game, plus a service fee of $10 per game. This can be expensive so if you want a game to keep, choose to buy it in-store or online.

How do I know that all the parts of the game are accounted for?

Each rented game includes a checklist of every component that should come with the game. We suggest that you double-check the components of the game against this list right when you bring the game home. We will do our best job to ensure the game you rent is complete. If it isn’t, you should let us know within the first 12 hours of rental so that we can fix the situation!

What should I do before I return the rental?

Please count the pieces! Use the same checklist that you counted the components against when you received the game to ensure everything is contained in the box after your last play-through.

Help! I lost, damaged or messed up the game.

Board games aren’t invincible! There are lots of preventative measures you can do to help keep the games safe. We suggest that you keep the game away from messy situations such as young children, pets, food and spillable drinks. The boxes are often just cardboard, so be careful to avoid crushing them or water damage.

If the games are returned damaged (which does include excessive dirtiness) we will have to apply a fee, which will depend on the extent of the damage. At most, a lost or unplayable game will result in a fee equal to the retail cost of the game. Ultimately our goal is to keep the games in good condition so that lots of different households can enjoy them!
